Why do you hear a high pitch sort of pulsing when a train pes through a station at high speed?

I was coming back on a trip from Gloucester today and i was sitting on the station and a train sped through the station on the middle line flat out and the track made a pulsing sound before the train reached the station. What is this pulsing sound and why is it caused?
