My aquatic turtle ate a piece of gravel..help?

We just bought a turtle today and the guy at the reptile store where we bought him said the gravel we had for him was fine but I just saw him eat a piece of it. Why is he doing this? We have live gold fish in his tank along with reptomin turtle food and he still ate the gravel, is this normal? Please help!
