How did the Emancipation Proclamation affect the Confederate states?

In September,1862, President Lincoln issued a statement saying he would emancipate all slaves in any Confederate state that had not returned to the Union by January 1, 1863. Over 50,000 slaves were immediately freed when the proclamation went into effect. It committed the Union to ending slavery and allowed advancing Union troops to free slaves as they advanced further South.
